The Washington Redskins are a mess right now. Head coach Jim Zorn has a tenuous hold on his job at best and after Sunday’s—6 loss to Kansas City was stripped of his offensive play calling duties. Management installed newly hired ‘offensive consultant’ Sherman Lewis as the new offensive play caller and the team has set up an awkward arrangement for him to get the plays to the quarterbacks. For that reason, starting QB Jason Campbell has some serious misgivings about the efficacy of the setup.

Lewis has only been out of retirement and with the team for two weeks, and has spent this week trying to ingest a crash course on the Redskins’ offensive schemes. While he was learning on the job, head coach Zorn was trying to put the best spin possible on what can only be seen as a de facto demotion and vote of ‘no confidence’:

“I need to have composure. I need to understand what the reality of the situation is, and I think our players expect me to rise up. We expect them to play under adverse conditions. We expect them to risk it all. … I’m conscious of what’s going on. I’m not naive about what’s going on, and yet I have to just hold back on any feelings and make the decisions.”

Quarterback Campbell is more concerned about the convoluted system of getting plays from Lewis to him:

“There’ll probably be a couple of plays I have in my head just in case if some reason it doesn’t get in on time.”

Here’s how things are supposed to work-Lewis will sit in the coaches’ box above the field and read the plays off a sheet. While Lewis has years of experience working in the so called ‘West Coast Offense’, Zorn left doubt that he really knows what he’s doing at this point stressing that Lewis “doesn’t know the protections” and “doesn’t know the blitz schemes.” Nevertheless, he’ll be running the offense when the Redskins take on Philadelphia this Monday night.

Once Lewis figures out what to call, that’s when it really gets tricky. He’ll relay the plays via headset not to Zorn but to offensive coordinator Sherman Smith. Smith will then inform the quarterback what to run. Zorn is left in the role of a passive bystander on offense, though he will listen in to the playcalling on his headset.

Backup quarterback Todd Collins also shared his concern with the new arrangement:

“It is unsettling. I’ve never gone through this before. I’ve never had a play caller get changed in the middle of the season.”

Lewis didn’t exactly evoke a lot of confidence upon his hiring, where he revealed that he’d been calling bingo games at a seniors’ center to kill time since his retirement in 2004. Still, Collins gave him a guarded vote of confidence;

“I know he’s been studying last year’s game against the Eagles and seems to have a pretty good idea how he wants to call the game this week. It’s the same plays. He might coach them a little differently or highlight some different areas, but the offense hasn’t gone under an overhaul or anything like that.”

The Redskins haven’t scored more than 17 points in a game this season, so maybe the thinking is that things can’t get any worse. The NFL odds for Monday Night’s game show the Eagles a -7 road favorite with the total set at 37′.

It is of utmost importance to be absolutely honest about your game. The Pro will ask you what you think you need to start with: driving, chipping, putting or whatever you feel you need assistance with.

Listen to the Pro golfer very carefully and follow the Pro’s instructions. You may have concerns if the Pro changes your stance, your grip or your swing, but honestly, the Pro does know what is best.

Don’t hesitate to ask the Pro golfer any questions. Don’t worry about whether your question or concern may sound stupid – they’ve heard it all before and will not make you feel like a fool for asking. If you don’t get it, tell him/her that you do not understand. You should never walk away from a lesson with unanswered questions.

For example, a strategy might be to concentrate on one thing during a lesson, or on several. You might start with a lesson on driving; get the right grip, the right stance, the right swing, the right follow-through in one lesson, and then practice it for a few weeks until you feel that you’ve got it right. Next time, you might want to work on your short game, or putting.

How many facts are there to be known or learned about all the objects and phenomenon in our entire universe? Just think: there are about 1 x 10 ^22 stars in the universe, that’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars; then there are many of those stars that have planets in orbit around them. Then consider the moons that orbit those planets and the comets and asteroids, the galaxies these stars form, the nebulae and black holes and everything else that’s out there. The amount of information and data is really quite mind-boggling. This article definitely will not contain every fact about astronomy, but they are very interesting facts nevertheless.

We will start by taking a look at a small section of astronomy: “the brightest stars seen from the Earth”. That is excepting the Sun which is roughly 250,000 times nearer than the next nearest star. In fact, it is so bright that when the sky is viewed from the Earth, it blinds out all the other stars in the sky during a phenomenon called daytime.

Remember that according to the scale for the magnitudes given, lower numbers are brighter. Our Sun would be about -26.73, while the full moon is -12.6. So, with that in mind, here are the top 5:

#5 is Vega, meaning ” falling eagle” in Arabic. is in Lyra. It’s more or less 25 light years away and has a magnitude of 0.04.

When considering these astronomical facts, please remember that ‘brightest from Earth’ doesn’t mean largest or brightest. The Sun is not the largest or brightest star in the universe or even the galaxy, yet it appears so bright because it is so near compared to other stars.

#4 is Rigel – a very bright, bluish-white supergiant star in the constellation Orion. It is a binary star, with an average apparent magnitude of 0.12. It’s scientific name is Beta Orionis. Rigel is Arabic for ‘foot’. It’s about four light years from Earth.

#3 is Arcturus. The name is Latin/Greek and means ‘guardian of the bear’. This star is roughly 37 light years away. It is in the constellation of Bootes, behind The Great Bear. It has a magnitude of 0.00

#2 Canopus – the Greek name of the pilot of the sailing ship Argo in the stories of Jason and the Argonauts, is the brightest, however, because it is 313 light years from Earth, it’s only second in this list of the five brightest stars seen from Earth. It has a magnitude of -.62.

#1 is Sirius, which translate from the Greek as ‘scorching’. It’s also sometimes called the ‘Dog Star’ because it is the brightest star in the constellation of Canis Major, which means ‘The Big Dog’ in Latin. It is situated only 9 light years from Earth, which makes it easily the second closest of these top five. It has a magnitude of -1.44, which makes it very easily the brightest star that can be observed in the night sky.

These few data don’t even scratch the surface of subject of astronomy but it’s something for you to think about the next time you gaze up into the night sky.

3. The Country Peddler Show comes to Arlington Convention Center in March, August and November every year. People from all around converge to sell just about anything you can imagine. Among the menagerie of goodies to be found are stained glass, stepping stones, homemade jelly, specialty clothing, candles, handmade quilts … and too much more to list!

I first arrived in Thailand in 2004 and I came here more of less by accident. I had travelled a lot in Europe: Russia, Western Europe, Scandinavia, North Africa and north South America, but I had never got around to travelling to Asia.

One night, I was talking to a friend who had travelled extensively throughout the world and he was telling me about his favourite place, to where he had been returning year after year for fourteen years. I had to ask him which part of huge Asia held such an enticement for him and he said Thailand. I knew practically nothing about Thailand, except that I had had a few meals at a near-by Thai restaurant over the years. I also knew from collecting stamps as a kid that it used to be called Siam. Anyway, my friend asked me if I’d like to go. I answered that I would ‘one day’ and meant it.

He surprised me by saying that he was going for a month soon and that I was welcome to go with him. I replied that I had a few jazz festivals to go to soon and maybe I would, if there was at least a month between them and if I could get a flight and if… I could hear myself putting him off, but I did not understand why.

A number of hours later, I went home and being a keen Internet surfer, I checked out a bit about Thailand on the travel brochure sites. It looked really fantastic. The prices were good too except for the flights. Hotels were cheap to reasonable and food and drinks prices were low compared to where I lived. So, I checked the dates of the two Jazz festivals and they were thirty-three days apart. Now for the flight. I spent well into the next morning checking flights and found one for the day after the first festival leaving from our local airport. It was far from the cheapest flight, but it gave me more time.

In a reckless moment I booked it there and then online. I then found a pub with rooms to let online that my friend had said he went to on quiz evenings and guessed that they would be open by now serving breakfasts. I sent them an email and a reply came back twenty minutes later. I had been lucky again. The boss was in the middle of checking yesterday’s figures, when he saw my email come through. However, not sure of his Internet ability, he asked me to phone him right away. I checked my watch, it was still 4AM so I phoned.

He took my booking on trust and so I did not have to make a payment. I had been told about Thailand, made up my mind to go and booked the flight and room all within five hours and I could not wait for nine o’clock to come to notify my friend that I would be going too.

So, you think you ought to learn a new hobby and it’s going to be fishing. There are several methods of finding out how to fish, the hardest way being trial and error, however, the best way is to find an expert for one-to-one lessons.

4. Select a pier: After you have already acquired the skills to use a rod and reel, you need to look for a fishing pier. Most seaside cities have a public pier or pay-to-fish pier. You can rent tackle and buy bait on these piers and, if you do have problems, there are plenty of pier anglers willing to help and give you tips.

5. To do party or pier?: You should do either method three or four times each or both at the same time at this point. The best thing to do is to practise them both ways several times to really learn how to do each method.

6. The reel deal: The conventional reel is probably what you’ve been using up to this point. The conventional reel is designed to take loads of wear and tear. However, maybe you now want to consider other types or / and makes of reels. Ideally you have already met other fishermen and perhaps made a friend or two who can assist you in selecting a reel. You could even ask a tackle store owner for tips.

Firstly, you need to learn the mechanism of the reel and the other equipment. Learning to cast, tie knots and bait is not really all that complicated. Secondly, you must learn where to fish. Successful fishermen know where the fish are schooling. Fish move from place to place and knowledgeable anglers understand these patterns and are able to anticipate where the fish are likely to be schooling.

Fishing equipment is called fishing tackle by specialists and hobbyists and it usually refers to rods, lines, hooks, sinkers, spears, lures, bait, reels, nets, and et cetera. The fishing gear that is attached at the end of a line is called terminal tackle

The word tackle when it refers to fishing equipment comes from ‘takel’ which initially meant the rigging on a ship, that is, the gear consisting of ropes supporting a ship’s masts and sails. The most rudimentary fishing equipment is made up of of a rod, a line, a hook, a lure, a bait and a weight or sinker. There are various questions that an angler asks when buying a fishing line, like its resistance, stretch, strength et cetera. The line will be selected based on what species of fish the angler intends to catch.

The sinker or weight, also referred to as a plummet, is really only a weight that assists in casting the hook and the bait as far as possible from the shoreline or from the boat that the fisherman is using. They are usually made of lead because it is cheap and easy to melt at home. However, lead sinkers have been outlawed in some parts of the world, especially the very small ones, which are often called ‘shot’. If eaten by birds or other fish, the lead, which is well-known to be poisonous, will cause the death of that animal.

Another basic piece of fishing gear is the hook. This device meant for attaching the bait on the line and for hooking into the fish’s mouth. It is attached to the line and the fisherman can choose from a very wide range of shapes, sizes and materials.

And last but far from least, is the bait or lure, without which fishing equipment cannot be effective. A lure is a man-made device attached to the end of the line that resembles the prey of the fish you are after in every way. Its purpose is to attract the attention of the fish with its colour shape and movement. Artificial flies, tiddlers and sand eels come into under this category. When the fish bites the lure, it becomes hooked.

Whilst, bait, on the other hand, is the item physically attached to the hook. Bait is often of two types: animal or foodstuff: ‘animal’ refers to small fish or other water creatures, insects or crawlers and ‘foodstuff’ refers to things like grains, such as wheat, bread or whatever the angler thinks might attract the fish.

I picked up one of those ‘Golfing for Women’ type magazines the other day and got to asking myself where these women actually live, who wear the golf attire shown in women’s golf magazines? I have never seen women, not even the pros, wearing such expensive and flamboyant clothes.

It’s so simple to spend tons of money kitting yourself out for the sport of golf. Think about hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes, and it is obvious that the costs add up very quickly, even if you do your shopping at cheap online sales. Then you have to add in the cost of clubs, balls, bag, cart and fees and you have to play a round of golf really quite frequently to keep the “CPU” (cost per use) down to a tolerable level.

One half-page advert showed a beautiful young ‘golfing lady’ in really tiny shorts (like that’s permitted on golf courses!) that cost nearly $300, a golf shirt at almost $600, a jacket by Ralph Lauren at almost $200 and two-toned Utuser shoes costing $400 plus.

That totals just about $1,500! I know that it would be impossible for me to get the CPU on that outfit down to anywhere near a normal limit in my entire golfing life! Please don’t get me wrong – I do love clothes and I do really, really love shoes, but I could never afford, nor even want, golf shoes or pants that cost as much as most people’s weekly wages.

OK, you need comfortable golfing shoes that don’t look like an old pair of wooden clogs, but honestly, you will be able to buy less expensive and yet still trendy golfing shoes.

I have several very stylish golfing outfits, although none of them are brand names. If I totalled up the cost of all of them, it would not come to the price of a Tse golf shirt. Personally, I’d rather have several trendy outfits than one outrageously priced one.

If I were to wear a $1,500 set of golfing attire to play golf in, I would just be too worried about getting it dirty or perspiring in it to enjoy a decent round of golf.
