Shower Curtains in Fabric

December 6, 2009 by admin Comments Off

Once upon a time, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became fashionable. But, like most fads, common sense regained control and the fashions of yesterday have come around full circle. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are readily available most at stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t dump your old glass doors just yet either. The convenience and sophisticated look of the glass doors seem to be firmly established in some quarters. True blue die-hards of the glass doors will swear by these and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll find, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that people are laid back and will smile when asked about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll stick by their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the advantages of glass doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain as you take a shower, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to dry and air out.

Best of all is the easy cleaning granted by glass doors. However, as the fans of fabric shower curtains will also tell you, glass doors have their downsides as well, the biggest of which being that if you let the cleaning of the doors slide for even one week, stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re attached to the wall and some of these prove to have a stronger will than you do.

And if you don’t give the glass shower doors a regular cleaning, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will begin to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for just one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a contented grin on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and so can be changed quickly.

Yes, that’s the one whopping big reason why fabric shower curtains continue to be a firm favourite with loads of people. Have you ever tried changing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen within a span of five years, unless that is you take a very large sledgehammer to it by accident.

So, now you understand the reason for that mysterious smile and why fabric shower curtains never really went out of style. Convenience, more convenience and still more convenience. So if you’re considering of changing from your glass shower doors to the more convenient, disposable fabric shower curtains don’t be put off by having to get started

Once you remove those doors, your life is bound to become simpler, and if it’s not, just exchange one pair of fabric shower curtains for new ones. If nothing else it’ll make you feel better!

Home Theater: Lighting

October 17, 2009 by admin Comments Off

Light fixtures are things that not many of us think about very often. However, the way we light a room can cause us to feel a certain way or enhance the atmosphere we want to create in that room. There are many types of light fixtures, fittings, bulbs, shades and stands to suit all areas of the home. That means both indoors and even outdoors where you might want to emphasize some special landscaping design.

Are you planning to redo a room? In this case, I know it concerns a home movie theater room, but it could be any room. I think that you should definitely consider light fixtures as one element to change. For example, you could start by changing the central, overhead incandescent bulb or tube light for sure.

My suggestion would be to install four or even six small wall-lights; these are not expensive and come in hundreds of colours and sizes to suit any pocket. The only drawback with wall lighting for your home theater, is that the wires would really have to be chased into the wall so as not to appear unsightly.

However, you could avoid this by using standard lamps. These are also available in a myriad of designs, but they come with two drawbacks: namely trailing wires and a higher cost. They are moveable though. Small, table lamps is a sub-class alternative, but you may need more electrical points.

Once you have decided on what you want, have each lamp dimmable either in unison or separately, up to you. You should probably keep one fairly powerful light at the business end of things in case the equipment needs seeing to, but it too could be on a dimmer.

The effect can be stunning. And all from just changing the existing light fixtures and fittings. You could even go the whole hog and have an exit sign over the door or a few speciality lights higher up out of line of sight so that they are not distracting ” say, a 1970s style lunar lamp and a fibre-optic lamp, for amusement or as a talking point while waiting for the film or snacks to be prepared.

So, whatever style home theater lighting you are thinking of, contemporary or old style traditional, you will find many options to pick from – from different colors to different sizes and styles, there are many. You can find them on the Internet or in home improvement stores. I have made a link to one of my online favourites below.

Furthermore, when you do make the changes, you will notice that your home theater has taken on an atmosphere all of its own and it will “definitely” enhance your home theater experience. It may be these minor changes, room by room, that make you see your home in a completely different light.

Using House Lights to Great Effect.

September 24, 2009 by admin Comments Off

When you are taking into consideration the interior design of a dwelling or area, illumination is probably the most important aspect of the changes to the interior decoration. After all, it is the element that creates the atmosphere of the room. You can create moods from intimacy to stark clinicalism just by the strength of your light bulb or turning a dimmer switch.

Nevertheless, if you want to be sure that the consequence of the lighting is the one you are looking for, it is important that you be familiar with the four principal kinds of lighting.

Ambient illumination: This is the general illumination for the entire room. In most rooms it is the standard light in the centre of the ceiling be it a fluorescent tube or an incandescent bulb. It is suggested that you make use of one or more dimmers in order to have more flexibility in creating special effects for each occasion.

Local lights: These lights are used to complement or even temporarily take the place of the ambient illumination. Local lights are most frequently standard lamps, table and wall lights and are ordinarily used in order to facilitate such activities as reading, cooking, and shaving. The concentration of the light is local and it has to be correctly worked out so it won?t strain the eyes.

Accent lights Accent lights are sources of light for displaying ornamental items, ordinarily placed so as to highlight an objet d?art . Quite literally to show it in its best light.

Natural light: This is the one we get free though skylights, windows and doors. This light is controllable for part of the day by shades, curtains, drapes, blinds or awnings, but clearly varies with the time of the day, the season and the weather. Some locations see huge variations in natural light according to the season, eg monsoon, snow, etc.

It is possibly easiest, if you undertake a house room by room. Begin by analyzing what the room is used for. Retirees will in all probability want to take advantage of the daytime natural light for hobbies and reading, while a working couple with school-age kids, will be more active in the evening, when additional illumination might be more important. Write down what you do and where you do it. Do you have a favourite armchair for reading the paper, do you read the paper during daylight hours or after work? Be bold in your choice of illumination, but also keep in mind that illumination can have a great influence on our perception of dimensions, making a room look larger or smaller than it is in reality.

There are numerous ways to illuminate a room but they all come from one of two perspectives: the lighting is either practical or artistic. Yes, they are both used to enable you to see more easily, but highlighting the pages of a book or a shaving mirror is not quite the same as using a soft light to highlight a statue of the Madonna in an alcove.

In a short summary, you could use the few lines below to give you initial thoughts when you are considering changing a room?s illumination:

i] Place a standard lamp behind armchairs: they ought to be between three and five feet high. ii] Use an accent light to high or even low light a work of art. iii] Use an accent light to underline the lines of bookshelves. iv] The ambient light should be adjustable. v] Use local illumination to swathe the walls with a low light or glow (can be recessed into the floor)

Well, to start with, the number of interior design colleges that you will encounter in your search will be large and, at times, even confusing. If you do a search on the Internet or just ring up the colleges and ask for a course catalogue you can then take an informed decision about which of the interior design colleges you would like to go to.

If your life is too hectic these days, but you still want to fit in a course or two, you have the option of studying at any of the Internet interior design colleges that seem so numerous these days. Or perhaps you could even try a night course or correspondence course in your pursuit of interior design knowledge.

All of these interior design colleges basically teach the same things and will enhance your own abilities. You’ll learn everything from scratch and will be given an insight as to why certain colours look good next to each other and why certain colours don’t.

You’ll learn when to use the rules that you’ve been taught and when to break them. But above all, you’ll be taught how to use your natural design abilities with the knowledge that you’ve gathered at the college and blend it into a mixture that is greatly stunning to the eye.

Moreover, if interior design colleges are your thing then you can be assured of coming away with a lot more than only knowledge on how to place what colour next to what colour to get a stunning effect. Wall Sconces

August 12, 2009 by admin Comments Off

One of the popularly used fixtures these days are the wall sconces. They are actually being used since a very long time. Earlier they were used to hold candles and torches, but now they are available in many different styles to fulfill your lighting needs.

These fixtures can be used as task lighting to perform specific tasks or can also be used to soft environment lights for illuminating the space but not very brightly. The lighting effect produced by the fixture will be determined by the type of material and style chosen.

You can go for glass wall sconces for areas that do not need much light as glass has a tendency to diffuse light and it can be used as ambient lighting for the area. You can use sconces with halogen or xenon bulbs for work areas like reading etc. These provide bright white light that will be suitable for such tasks.

You can also go for metal wall sconces which diffuse light to a large extent and thus can be used in areas where you need dim light like you can use it as a night light.

Markets are flooded with different styles of wall sconces. You can get very fancy ones as well as simple designs are also available. These are also available in different sizes. You can select the shape and the size as per your home decor. You can go for short horizontal fixtures or long cylindrical ones like a wall torchhiere.

To determine the right style of sconce for your home, begin by evaluating the room and the objects already in it. What material, color, or trend is predominant in your rooms decor? Do you want to enhance or highlight the decor and atmosphere of the room? Wall lights should be chosen to complement the look of other lighting in the room as well as the architecture and decorating style of the home.

Wall sconces are the fixtures that can be used anywhere through out the home. But make sure that you have proper wire fittings for that particular wall. If not, you can always take help from a professional electrician for their installation. Latest fixtures do not require heavy wiring. They just need a cord and a plug.

These fixtures do not take up much floor space. They bring ambiance to a room and can be used with any kind of decor theme. Just make sure that you select the right style of wall sconces and place them correctly.

Will I Need a Home Movie Theater Projector?

June 15, 2009 by admin Comments Off

Going to the movies is a very popular recreation especially for those young professionals living very|considerably stressful lives managing corporate affairs. However, for those who cannot afford to spend time travelling back and fore to movie theaters, the solution to this recreational problem could be just inside their own home.

You could recreate audio-visual systems of the movie theaters with your very own personal custom home theater system. The best custom home theater set up certainly can include high quality components that are capable of rendering the entire movie theater experience without having to drive from your dwelling to the movie theater spending time and effort waiting in heavy traffic. This modern technology can give you the relaxation and experience that full-sized movie theaters furnish.

The basic components: a wide screen and loudspeakers with clear and flicker free images from a high quality DVD, can easily create quite an authentic movie-going experience. Home theater professionals recommend that before you choose the final set-up and equipment for your custom home theater system, the dimensions of the room must be the first thing to think about.

Therefore, if you have a small size room in mind for your home theater system, a television set may be best placed in the middle of one wall and three loudspeakers, stood on the left, right and center, could be enough to recreate the surround sound you desire from a custom movie theater. However, if you have a larger room, a home theater projector might be the best option for recreating that big screen experience.

Home theater projector screens can provide an authentic movie theater experience. If you have a very large location for your home theater system, in combination with your home theater projector and home theater projector screen, you could add some more loudspeakers around the room. A further useful recommendation is that a sub-woofer could also help to provide the optimum surround sound to enable you to produce that true sound of a movie theater in your own living room.

There are various designs and models of home theater projector you can choose from. You will need to understand the features of each one, before you decide on which one to buy. It may also be necessary for you to enlist the services of a home theater designer in order to get the home theater package that will give you the best entertainment. This will mean not needing to spend an unreasonable amount of time and money on your home theater system and home theater projector.

It is so easy to buy kit with an over- capacity for your home theater, especially if you do not know what the choices are and the various requirements that your home theater may have due to the room’s size. The dimensions of your home theater projector screen should be a function of the size of your custom home theater and the components of your custom home theater. For example, from where you intend to sit to the screen should be between two and five times the diagonal diameter of the screen. So, looking at it from another point of view, if you are going to sit 10 feet (120 inches) from the screen, then the screen should be 24-60 inches, but it is very subjective and depends on the viewers eyes.

Your home theater designer could easily also suggest options that may not require a television set for your home theater. How is this so? The reason for this is the technological innovations provided by computers and home theater projectors. Home theater projectors like InFocus screenplay models can be used in conjunction with a computer in a small room set-up. Home theater projectors are also lightweight and may be transported easily. For this reason, a projector is very useful for use in custom home theaters and business presentations.

Home theater projectors and home theater projector screens do help provide a true cinema-like experience. This type of set-up is particularly useful for business presentations and that is why it is becoming more and more popular. Combining your custom home and custom office theater systems is a new phenomenon, which only a couple of smart consumers have thought of.

However, I am sure that being aware of all these options: ie, that a basic television set, three speakers and a DVD player can be perfectly adequate for people who only want a basic home theater, you may decide that you do not really need a home theater projector, especially if the room for your custom home theater system is not very large.

Enjoy a cinematographic experience right in your own home by researching your options intelligently. You can then experience the relaxation a movie theater gives you without having to endure heavy traffic on the way to and from the movie theater.
