Home Improvement Power Tools Tips For Individuals Looking To DIY

September 23, 2009 by admin Comments Off

In years gone by, repairs around the house were considered as work for contractors. In modern times, there is no reason why normal people should not to know how to use home improvement power tools. All you need is knowledge of six basic power tools and you will be on your way to home repair independence.

The most basic safety rule should be obvious: Never use a tool for anything other than what it was intended for. If you have children, stress that power tools are not toys. Do not let them play with the tools even when they are unplugged or turned off. Also, familiarize yourself with the purpose of each tool so that you do not use the wrong tool for a job.

Power drills are simple to operate. You put in the proper size drill bit and turn it on to drill a hole. With some practice, you can easily learn what size hole to drill for various projects.

Now you’re ready for your first saw. Reciprocating saws may look frightening, but if you can use a kitchen knife, you can use a reciprocating saw. You use this power tool to carve through wallboard and paneling.

If a tool requires protective clothing, make sure you wear that clothing. Sanders, for example, require you to wear protective goggles to keep dust from getting into your eyes. You should also make sure to use any protective apparatus on the power tools themselves. Compound miter saws often come with protective guards to be placed on the blades when not in use.

It may seem like a pain to keep taking such guards on and off, but this simple precaution stops anyone from cutting themselves on a sharp blade.

Once you’ve mastered all these tools, you’re ready for the big boss–the compound miter saw. This saw has a spinning circular blade and is used for making crosscuts in wood. Don’t panic; this saw is far safer than you’d think. It even has a safety cover to protect the blade when not in use. Home improvement power tools are neither hard to use nor dangerous. By using them, you can gain confidence and independence–two things every modern individual should want.

One of the popularly used fixtures these days are the wall sconces. They are actually being used since a very long time. Earlier they were used to hold candles and torches, but now they are available in many different styles to fulfill your lighting needs.

These fixtures can be used as task lighting to perform specific tasks or can also be used to soft environment lights for illuminating the space but not very brightly. The lighting effect produced by the fixture will be determined by the type of material and style chosen.

You can go for glass wall sconces for areas that do not need much light as glass has a tendency to diffuse light and it can be used as ambient lighting for the area. You can use sconces with halogen or xenon bulbs for work areas like reading etc. These provide bright white light that will be suitable for such tasks.

You can also go for metal wall sconces which diffuse light to a large extent and thus can be used in areas where you need dim light like you can use it as a night light.

Markets are flooded with different styles of wall sconces. You can get very fancy ones as well as simple designs are also available. These are also available in different sizes. You can select the shape and the size as per your home decor. You can go for short horizontal fixtures or long cylindrical ones like a wall torchhiere.

To determine the right style of sconce for your home, begin by evaluating the room and the objects already in it. What material, color, or trend is predominant in your rooms decor? Do you want to enhance or highlight the decor and atmosphere of the room? Wall lights should be chosen to complement the look of other lighting in the room as well as the architecture and decorating style of the home.

Wall sconces are the fixtures that can be used anywhere through out the home. But make sure that you have proper wire fittings for that particular wall. If not, you can always take help from a professional electrician for their installation. Latest fixtures do not require heavy wiring. They just need a cord and a plug.

These fixtures do not take up much floor space. They bring ambiance to a room and can be used with any kind of decor theme. Just make sure that you select the right style of wall sconces and place them correctly.
