The Use Of Adobe Flash

October 9, 2009 by admin Comments Off

The question is often raised during meetings with managers and business top dogs: Is it alright to have a flash animated web site? How do we use Adobe Flash properly to build a web site?

Flash is a software for creating graphic-based animation that can help a website become richer and more interactive. Flash is a great tool for creating online training modules, product demonstrations and other types of contents that require interaction. However, one major drawback of Flash is that search engines, including Google, cannot understand the contents of the website if it is all written using Flash. As a result, the search engine’s ranking of such a website would be greatly affected.

There is a simple way to prove whether a web page can be “indexed” or not. On a web page, try to highlight the text, which means the content, by clicking the left button of your mouse and dragging it over the text. If you are able to highlight the text in blue, that means the text of the page are in different “layers”, hence it can be “indexed”. It is because a web page can only be “indexed” when the text or any graphic on that page are in different “layers”, which is essential for search engines to “index” a page as those engines can “index” text-based content easily.

When Flash is used to build a web site, the text will be put into different layers as photos or graphics. This make it difficult for Google to index the page. Google needs to be able to read the web site and look for information so that they can put the web page under a certain keyword searching database system. Indexing is therefore extremely vital.

Google and Adobe Flash used to be absolutely incompatible. There have be attempts of collaboration between the two companies to solve the indexing problem, but none of the testing results, whether successful or not, are yet to be found. It can be appealing to many since Flash does make a web page layout look more attractive, but there is a reason why a lot of people still stick to text-based content up till now.

It is indeed undeniable that Flash is one of the best design tools when it comes down to the appearance of a website. It is also user-friendly in many ways. What we cannot change is that Google still has problems reading Flash contents and this is obstructive for the search engine to work optimally.

Some websites may have two versions for users – “HTML Site” and “Flash Web Site”. It can solve the problem of Google indexing but it also leads to another problem. With two versions, the web owner needs to govern two different websites and this creates excess burdens on the owner.

A better solution to the problem is to embed flash content within a HTML website. This way, you can still utilize the outstanding functions of Flash to create an attractive and functional website while allowing Google to index the other text-based content on your website. With this strategy, you can achieve your goal of search engine optimization with little compromise on the design and functionality of your website.
