Eight Ways to Generate Links for Your Website

May 15, 2009 by admin Comments Off

Every webmaster wants better search engine rankings, and there is no better way to improve search engine rankings than by obtaining links from other websites. Here are eight proven techniques for doing just that.

1. Sending link request emails to other website owners. It takes a lot of time to identify appropriate websites and send out the emails, but the potential rewards are high. Buying link building software can automate most of the process and greatly increase efficiency.

2. Directory listings: listings in directories still carry weight with the search engines. The most important directory is dmoz, but the-big-brain, and many others are well worth submitting to as well.

3. All website owners should write and/or buy brief articles and submit them to article distribution websites. Each article should include an author biography (with your name and website URL), that will be run with the article. That way, every website that uses the artcle will generate a link. It is not uncommon for a single article to be picked up by 500 websites, thereby generating 500 links for the author’s website.

4. Press releases: you can write your own news releases or pay to have them written for you. Either way, be sure they include links to your websites. There are services that will send out your press releases to a few news outlets for free, or numerous outlets for a fee.

5. All webmasters should have at least one blog on which he or she promotes and links to his or her website. Nothing could be easier…all that’s required is a very brief article once a week on a topic related to the site owner’s website. For folks with absolutely no writing skills, there are services which will write blog posts for as little as $10.

6. Many website owners have picked up lots of links from their listings on Facebook and similar sites.

7. Guest blogging: offer articles to appropriate blogs if they allow you to include an author’s box with a link to your website.

8. Useful, relevant posts in guestbooks and on forums and blogs, with your URL in your signature, can produce many links with little effort. But, do not spam. Post only when you really have something of value to say.

There are other techniques you can try, but be careful about “black hat” tactics like buying links unless you are willing to risk being penalized by the search engines.
